When I travel, I make sure I have the local cuisine of the particular country I am visiting. I like going native when it comes to food. So I spent some Summer time in Laos and Park Houay Mixay was one of the highlights of going local culinary-wise.
Located conveniently on Sothikhoummane Road, this wooden house-restaurant features outdoor and indoor seating. Their specialty is traditional Luang Prabang cuisine and their menu boasts a wide selection of ethnic dishes.
The spicy shrimp paste with steamed vegetables was a surprise but a good surprise. I wanted some greens and I got a whole plateful of it. With sticks of different vegetables and a bowl of shrimp paste as a dip, this slighty spicy, tangy sauce was a hit.
The Laotian spring roll was average and nothing to write home about. The Luang Prabang style spicy fish stew was not as spicy as I expected it to be. But the fish was fresh and the flavor of the soup was light and full of fresh herbs and you can really taste the flavor of the fish.
The stir-fried chicken with paprika and curry leaves reminded me of a similar Thai curry stir-fried dish. The vegetables were crisp and the chicken was tender and bite-sized. The curry flavor was just right - not too overpowering so you can actually taste the freshness of the greens.
My favorite dish hands down was the fried fish in spicy and herbal sauce. This perfectly cooked fish dish had the crunch and yet retained the full flavor of the fresh fish. The sauce of a combination of fish sauce, lime, chillis, nuts and herbs, It was spicy, chewy and tender all at the same time. I wanted more and this dish was something I thought about for days!
This is a place to check out when going local. Sitting outside with the Summer breeze and having good food and great company is something I will never get tired off.
