Perhaps it’s the influence of deep-seeded passion or faith but monks do do it better. They make wine, spearheaded modern genetics, have recording deals (that one cancels itself out. The Gregorian chanting of popular 90s one-hit wonder songs give me a terrible headache) and make fantastic beer.
The Augustiner Brewery in Salzburg makes one of the best beers I ever had. Hands down. It was light, refreshing and just simply wonderful. The monastery-turned-refinery has stores where you can buy German/Austrian staples – like pretzels, currywursts, pork knuckle etc to have with your beer. In the summertime, you sit outside in the gardens but in the wintertime, the large dining hall is well-heated and has a very vintage vibe. Really vintage.
It’s all fun – people sit, talk, drink and just stay there for hours (you can even have a tour of the compound if you so desire). With beer this delicious, I do wonder how monks will perform in the bedroom…
