Raf Simons Wool Sweater With Contrast Neckline
Raf Simons Wool Sweater With Contrast Neckline details
Being able to play with layers is one of the things I like about Fall - to contrast fabric and color. Hence this featured sweater.

The grey neckline contrasts perfectly against the dark navy/black exterior while adding a quiet, stylized punch. Simple yet so terribly appealing, this is one that will get you through cold days and then come.

And it's really not just for Fall, wear this on its own during the warmer months instead of layering it. And plus, rest assured that this will never go out of style.

Standard Issue by Hyden Yoo Military Sweater
Standard Issue by Hyden Yoo Military Sweater details
Military-inspired garbs appeal to me. It's the pockets, the structured feel, the masculine details that hit all the right sartorial spots. So imagine my excitement when I saw this fantastic piece by Standard Issue - a collaboration between New York designer Hyden Yoo and street favorite Urban Outfitters.

I've been a fan of Hyden Yoo's work for a while now and this is another must-have piece for me. The black long sleeve design makes for a chic companion this winter while the military details inject a dose of desirability. The woven flap pockets on the chest and the sides is my favorite part of this piece - there is an air of constructed cool that I just can't get enough of.

The woven epaulets and the buttoned cuffs add a sliver of toughness and dressy-ness that will be appreciated. The best thing about this is its super affordable price-tag, at US$58, this really is a splendid buy!

Comme Des Garcons Play V-Neck Knit
Comme Des Garcons Play V-Neck Knit detail
I am a huge fan of Comme Des Garcons Play's heart motif so much so that I have one in every color and in a few different styles. There's just something about the mouth-less heart that is so arresting and appealing.

I am a big fan of layering and this V-neck knit is perfect for that. The classic shape and grey shade will make this a standard in your wardrobe. The grey is flattering and will go with most everything.

The feeling that this heart motif evokes will bring some cheer to your work outfit. If you are in a work environment that has a certain dress code, simply wear this over a shirt and let the little Play heart do all the talking.

Its unassuming quality and quiet quirkiness makes this an instant classic - perfect for if you need a little hit of fun in your wardrobe.

Maison Martin Margiela 10 - Square Neck Sweater
Maison Martin Margiela 10 - Square Neck Sweater back
Sweaters - like V-neck ones, are one of the essential pieces in a wardrobe. Like white shirts, sweaters go with most everything and will serve you round all year round.

If you're a little tired of the classic V-neck design and want something different but yet clean and sophisticated at the same time, then my vote is for this square neck piece.

The square neck gives this a modern touch that will look great worn over a shirt or on its own. The lightweight wool and soft cotton blend makes this perfect for all year round wear. The grey shade is a classic standard and will never go out of style or look out of place.

Helmut Lang Squeegee-Print Hooded Sweatshirt

Helmut Lang Squeegee-Print Hooded Sweatshirt hood
I am not a hoodie person even though I understand the utility behind them but wearing a hoodie and sweatpants out of the house never appealed to me. But never say never because when done right, everything is possible.

Like this hooded sweatshirt. Granted it doesn't look like a traditional hoodie (the kind that Juicy Couture and Marc Ecko makes) which is also why this is scoring extra points. The unique print gives this contrast and a textured look that grows on you. I like how you can't really pin point the exact print or where it starts or ends.

The modern fit makes this a winner that will draw attention in all the good ways and instantaneous offer contrast and a hit of detail that pops.

Richard Chai Double-Breasted Sweater Coat
Richard Chai Double-Breasted Sweater Coat detail
I am not usually a fan of sartorial chunkiness and the outerwear of Fall can be guilty of that. It takes detail and a substantial punch to alleviate a piece's heaviness. And this double breasted coat has just that.

The zipper detail instantly adds an edge and completely removes all traces of chunkiness. It also elevates this coat to a whole other modern level. It looks current but not faddish. Completely on point and fresh.

It showcases perfectly the beauty of details and how something simple can make an outfit a lot more. Get this Richard Chai Double Breasted Seater Coat for US$825 at Saks Fifth Avenue
Banana Republic Merino Wool Four-Button Half-Zip Sweater
Banana Republic Merino Wool Four-Button Half-Zip Sweater detail
There are days when I just want to throw on some thing simple and not think anymore about what I am wearing. Especially when I am hanging around the house and keeping warm in Fall.  I want something comfortable and yet still looks decent if I need to run out to the store to grab some things for dinner or cocktails.

This merino wool piece is more than just decent. The buttoned-up and zip combination is simple and fuss-free while the great shade of grey is fantastic for Fall. It's not just for Fall, wear this on the colder nights of the warmer months of the year with both jeans or shorts.

I like the pocket on the chest very much especially so that it's an hidden pocket, so to speak. The only giveaway is the button closure and flap. There is a seamless feel to this detail and I am really liking it.

Ralph Lauren Black Label Silk/Cashmere Cricket Sweater
I am a big fan and huge believer in layering. It's a fantastic and easy way to play with color, texture and showcase multiple subtle details. A V-neck sweater is one of those evergreen wardrobe pieces. It never goes out of style and the V neck line makes for a fantastic pull-over over a shirt.

This silk/cashmere blend has my vote. Silk and cashmere is up there in the luxury aisle and you can be guarenteed that this super soft piece will give you form, style and comfort. The bright white detail at the neckline gives this a bout of color and contrast. And it's the only detail that this classic piece requires.

The pale grey shade is light and stunning. A perfect compliment to a white or black shirt - elevating an otherwise simple, plain shirt to a higher style notch.

Zippers are not just tools to protect your modesty or hold a piece of clothing together anymore. They have become details in their own right with their very own platform. You see them in shoes, accessories and of course, outerwear.

This kick-ass sweater has my name written all over it. The obvious and very striking detail is the fact that randomized zippers are strategically placed all over this piece with varying lengths. This is everything that this otherwise ordinary black sweater needs and who knew zippers could elevate a piece to such a desirable level?

This piece will instantly edge up any outfit and offer a platter of options. Play with it - leave some zipped, some unzipped, some partially unzipped to fully utilize the coolness of this awesome piece.

Armani Collezioni Chevron Sweater
Armani Collezioni Chevron Sweater detail
My favorite colors are grey and black (although black is technically not a color). They are quite fail-proof and will work for most every work or play outfit. However, this piece is an exception.

I recoiled when I first saw this. My first impression was that it would add years to your age (and not in a good way) and draw unwanted attention. Then I started looking at it some more and I began to see how this could be appealing but it was because the gaudy design would actually work on a tee-shirt.

But on this particular sweater, it just looks overdone and terribly unflattering. Perhaps this is catered to an older clientele but it still doesn't make this any more viable style-wise. Even if it's got my two favorite colors.

Rag And Bone Raglan-Sleeve Sweater

Rag And Bone Raglan-Sleeve Sweater collar
One thing I like to do during winter or whenever I feel cold is to have my hands buried in my pockets. Be it my jeans, pants or jacket or better yet, someone else's pants. So I've always enjoyed pockets.

This sweater from Rag and Bone is cute and stylish at the same time. I like the grey and black contrast - both my favorite colors. The kangaroo pockets are what drawn me to this piece. I like how they stand out and how good they actually look. A lot of times, you have hoodies with pockets that just look baggy and uninspired. This one looks good and is of the right size.

The wool and cashmere blend ensures you stay toasty and comfortable in the colder months. The slight ribbing on both sides of the neck add a subtle dash of detail.

Missoni Blue Urban Stripe Crew Knit Missoni Blue Urban Stripe Crew Knit upper detail Missoni Blue Urban Stripe Crew Knit detail middle Missoni Blue Urban Stripe Crew Knit detail lowerOne thing I love about Fall and winter is the freedom to play with layers. I love layering and these are the only times in the year where I can really go all the way without melting. That said, the colder months of the year are also times where I see people just overdoing it without any constrains.

I see the need to keep oneself warm but it is never charming to look like a knit piƱata. Which is how you would look with this mess of a piece. I understand the need for colors during the dark, sombre months but this is just crossing the line.

Firstly, I have no idea where to look first. Do I look at the upper cow like patches or the middle trippy section or the lava lamp inspired effect at the end? It just confuses me and what I don't get is just why so many patterns? It certainly doesn't make a piece more worth its price neither does it reward style points. All it did was made me cringe.

Plus, this also looks like some patch sweater made with good intentions and all by a 5th grader gone wrong because there just was no direction given. Which is how one would look with this on - lost and confused.

D&G Dolce & Gabbana Silk V-Neck Sweater D&G Dolce & Gabbana Silk V-Neck Sweater detailA V-neck sweater is an essential piece is every man's wardrobe; a versatile option that can be dressed up or down, for work or play, all year around. It also makes for perfect layering.

I am digging this navy silk number- the soft pure silk will be a breeze to wear which means you can have this on with a light shirt or tee in the summer and as one of the multiple layers in the winter.

The slight sheer along with the classic contrast trims go flawlessly together providing a sleek silhouette that shows off itself. The dark navy shade is great for every season and will remaining viable for years and years to come.

Hugo Boss Black Gamberale V-Neck Sweater Hugo Boss Black Gamberale V-Neck SweaterV-neck sweaters are one of the essential items in a man's wardrobe. They can versatile and can be dressed up or down depending on your mood and the climate. Worn alone during the warmer months or layered during the colder months. Either way, they will work flawlessly into both your work and play wardrobe.

This simple piece is our steal for the week - this shade of grey will never go out of style and the modern trim fit compliments the clean lines of this sweater. The quiet yellow trim along the V-neck adds the right dose of fresh color while still remaining subtle.

Emporio Armani Graphic Print Mock Neck Knit Emporio Armani Graphic Print Mock Neck Knit detail

Graphic prints are usually best taken in small doses - like medication. Because the result of someone being too generous with said prints is something like this.

I am all up for floral prints or prints that are inspired by nature. But I don't know what to make out of this sweater. Is this supposed to resemble a skinny tree bark with a single leaf? If so then, why stop there? Why not add roots and the complimentary weeds?

The contrast black strips on the cuffs are a cute detail but the cuteness dies there. Not really the kind of effect you want in dreary winter.

Balenciaga Sleeve Dot Knit detail Balenciaga Sleeve Dot KnitBalenciaga's Spring 09 is filled with science fiction influences, from the choice of fabric to the space age colors. It looks like the milky way inspired range got a head start this Fall with this simple yet unique sweater.

This 100% wool piece will keep you warm in subtle style. Layer it or wear it on its own; either way, you will be turning heads with the mono-tone rubber sleeve dots.

I am digging the play and use of fabric; the cool rubber dots remind of those cartoons I used to watch where the characters would communicate with each other via a device on their wrist.

I've always wanted one of those but this sweater would just suffice more than sufficiently!

Dries Van Noten Patterned Turtleneck Sweater

Staying warm during the winter months usually involves layers after layers. It is easy to look like a walking caricature of something you do not normally want to be associated with when done wrong. Hence, you want to keep it simple and yet stylish (keeping in mind the fit and colors that work for you).

This turtleneck sweater will not do you any justice. I don't understand why designers feel the need to complicate pieces. I will not be more drawn to an item just because there is an extra 3 rows of diamonds.

And plus, why would you want to look like a walking deck of cards? Playing and winning at the poker table is one thing. This is just an overkill and an outright display of too much enthusiasm. I'll pass, thanks.

D&G Dolce & Gabanna V-Neck SweaterV-neck sweaters make for great layering pieces all year round. During the Summer months, you can take this with you to the office or leave it in the car for when it gets chilly. For the Winter months, pair this with your favorite shirts.

The charcoal color provides an easy to match alternative to the usual black or white while the grey trim adds the right hint of color and detail. Its blend of cashmere, wool, nylon and rayon ensures softness while providing warmth.

Polo Ralph Lauren Sportsman's Windowpane SweaterSometimes, I wonder why certain details are left unedited on otherwise decent pieces. Just like this one. I have no idea why there is one skid colored patch on the shoulder and on both elbows. What is the purpose of that? And if there is some intrinsic usage for said patches, can't it at least be of an appealing color? Is that too much to ask?

This is such a shame because this sweater sans the hideous patches is actually quite charming. There is a cute welt pocket with a contrasting button and a light box pattern that would hit the spot if you were feeling preppy.

What is the rational behind the windowpane patches? So many questions, so little answers.

Raf Simons Mohair SweaterNow, playing with colors is a great way to jazz up an outfit. One simple contrast can make or break the whole look. That being said, this sweater is a color-overkill.

With blue, brown and lilac, my eyes are saturated with colors and I have no idea which one to focus on first. Why kill it with three colors? Why not just make it with 2?

And that orange chest block is blinding. It's too bright and it looks like someone poured orange washing detergent onto a blue sponge. And why would anyone want to look like they could remove grease and skid-marks?

Dior Homme Studded Front sweatshirt Dior Homme Studded Front sweatshirt 1For those lazy Fall days when you don't feel like dressing up but still want to look presentable and stay warm, a simple, detailed sweater is an easy way to look dapper while maintaining a laid-back vibe.

This navy studded sweater from Dior Homme will provide just the right amount of style points. Pair this with your favorite pair of jeans and some boots/sneakers or lace-ups and you're set.

Dsquared2 Nordic Zipped Sweater Dsquared2 Nordic Zipped Sweater 1Despite greenhouse effects and global warming, warm winters are still winters and that means keeping and staying warm with assistance. So you want to look sleek and structured and refined despite all your layers and not like a pudgy hip-hopper swimming in layers of wool.

You also do not want to look like a walking domino set. Which was my first thought when I saw this. This might be a traditional Nordic pattern and as much as I appreciate and respect tradition, I do not think this makes a stylish sweater.

In fact, it is just too much detail and I have no idea where to look first. And I don't care if it's a 'designer' piece because ugliness is ugliness and an ugly designer piece is just expensive visual assault.

If you're into Nordic patterns, you can fabric for only US$5-12 here. If you don't know how to knit or simply just don't have the time to, take the rest of the US$733 you would spend on this mess and hire someone to knit it for you. I bet you'll still have money to some salmon for dinner after!

Dolce & Gabbana Striped Sweater (Multi)

I am a fan of colors and I believe men shouldn't be afraid of adding colors to their wardrobe. When done right, wearing just one other color can easily jazz up your whole outfit. That said, this is a prime example of over doing it.

Firstly, why would anyone need so many colors on one sweater? Not being able to make up your mind and deciding on a color choice for your outfit is not a good excuse. I get it that Winter can be dark and gloomy at times but walking around like a variation of a Pride flag is not going to cheer up the people around you very much. Secondly, I think you're paying for the extra colors on this mess of a sweater. Stick to one or two colors and then save the rest of the money for your heating bill!

If you ever feel like going about your fall day looking like a confused popsicle, you can find this for US$600 at Diabro.
