Rules Of Style: The Perfect Fit
First impression matters and even though they might not be accurate or objective, they still count because it's harder to change an individuals's formed opinion of you than to make a good one the first time around.

We are all judged to some degree by how we appear - our hair, clothes, nails, shoes, skin. When it comes to clothes, fit is so so important. You can have the sleekest pieces but if they don't fit right, they don't look right.

Details has a guide to how clothes should fit. All aspect of a modern man's wardrobe - from shoes, to ties, to underwear, to formal wear. These rules are simple and you probably already have them ingrained somewhere at the back of your mind but it's always good to have a refresher. You never know what might hit close to home.

Rules Of Style: Rolled-Up Jean (Zac Efron)
I remember (unfortunately!) the 90s when I thought I was so so cool with my baggy jeans. They were beyond baggy - I had a 24" waist and I wore 32" jeans. I literally looked like the road-sweeping machines; the ones with the big brushes that sweep leaves off the sidewalks, because my jeans were literally sweeping the floors. So I had to cuff them up and the bigger the cuff, the cooler I thought I looked.

I was so wrong - my family tried many times to tell me so but when you're 13, it all falls on deaf ears.So the question is back - to cuff or not to cuff? Details explored the right ways to cuff your denim and the ways that should be avoided.

Personally, I do cuff my jeans but only a sliver (like Zac Efron pictured above) - it provides contrast and shows off my footwear; perfect if I am wearing boots, high-tops or chukkas. Subtlety is key and less is always more in this case. One good thing about growing older is learning from past mistakes especially sartorial ones.

I have a thing for grey and that has extended into denim. It is however, not that easy to find grey jeans. They are either too dark, too light or have unnecessary details. The thing with grey denim is that they instantly stand out and they don't blend like ordinary blue or black denim. So having a right shade is crucial.

I like this shade on this piece - it's light but it's got enough character to hold its own. With a low rise and tapered leg, this Japanese denim piece is modern and current - great for smaller built individuals.

I like how clean this looks. The back pockets are simple and classic while the white band on the coin pocket gives this a subtle sliver of color that the discerning will notice.

Rick Owens, makes dark beautiful clothes that have details that really draw you in. His dark, Gothic aesthetic is lean, mysterious and strong although I don't know if the prices of his pieces go with the anti-establishment sentiment of said goth movement. But nevertheless, there are always individuals like the AFI guys (one of my fav bands) who can certainly afford his pieces.

I digress. I saw this pair of jeans and I was inexplicably drawn to the zipper detail. It instantly gives an edge and an elevation of toughness that goes perfectly with this pair of jeans. The flap on the front pocket provides another sliver of detail that I really dig.

But then I look at the back and I am greeted with two jumbo pockets that honestly just spoil it for me. Their sheer size take away the sleekness of this piece and really just look unnecessary. Plus, they would look too overwhelming if you are shorter than 5'10. Which is a shame because aside from the pockets, this is a kick-ass pair of jeans. Shame.

I know the 80s are back - with boxy shoulders and neon colors. But that's not a good enough reason for this pair of jeans. I mean, I am all for gender blending dressing and breaking down barriers but lace on a pair of jeans? WTF?!

And it's not just lace on a pair of jeans per se. It's just lace on a pair of jeans that is horrendeously executed. Perhaps they were channeling a Like A Virgin Madonna but this one just looks sad and trashy - and completely unnecessary.

It just looks like a home DIY project gone wrong and why would you want to look like a bag person? I have to stop looking at this - it's really turning me off.

I am still not done with my search for new jeans. So far I've only acquired 2 new pairs of jeans which is not even half the quantity I gave away. So the search goes on. My latest pair is one from Blue Cult that I came across by accident. After some nip/tucking done by my alteration guy, my latest pair looks like it was just made for me.

I do wish it was easier to buy jeans but my frame does not make it off-the-rack friendly. But if you don't have my problem, take a look at this pair.

I am loving the deep shade of Indigo, this would serve you well for work or play. Dressed up or down. The slim fitting cut will not work for every body type but for those looking for a pair that fits narrower, this is one to check out.

I am loving the clean lines and the simple yet effective white contrast on the back pocket. No unnecessary logos, plaques, brand stamps. Just a visible white line of clean that I really appreciate.

The darting through the inner thigh ensures this fits well throughout the leg while the extra fabric at the front pockets make it easier and more convenient to reach your belongings. This attention to detail and the needs of everyday consumers is something I think all designers should follow.

Made from raw Selvage Denim, this not only looks good but is also hardy. Get this for US$240 at Blackbird.

Cheap Monday Tight Skinny Jeans in White and Dots Cheap Monday Tight Skinny Jeans in White and Dots detail When I was 6, I had a clown stuff toy and it had bright orange hair and wore colored polka-dot pants. I don't really remember who gave it to me but I remember falling from my 2 story bunk bed and landing into a laundry basket full of hangers once and the first thing I saw when I landed was this clown stuff toy smiling at me. I threw it away there and then. It was disturbing at that time.

Just like how this pair of jeans is seriously disturbing me and I am not 6 anymore. These look like the pair that my stuff toy was wearing which may look fine on a clown and if you're in a costume but ridiculous if you're going out for afternoon tea.

I don't know just what one would wear this with. It's in a skinny cut - the kind of cut that is favored by punks and hipsters and this in no way is punk or cool. All is does is just scream for unwanted attention and I guess that is what clowns do.

But to actually pay money for something like this is a whole other story. Find this for US$70 at Tobi.

7 For All Mankind Straight Leg Jeans in Vintage Nakita 7 For All Mankind Straight Leg Jeans in Vintage Nakita side 7 For All Mankind Straight Leg Jeans in Vintage Nakita back pocket detailBack in the 90s when I was growing up, ripped jeans were all the rage. I watched as my sisters tried to poke holes and tear their jeans purposely with the full intention of having a tear that looks genuinely authentic. I thought being able to pull off such a look meant you were cooler than the rest and I wished then, that I would grow up quicker so I could hopefully be half as cool.

Now that I am grown up and a lot wiser, I do not want to grow older so quickly and neither do I think extremely ripped jeans of yesteryears are cool anymore. That said, I do love vintage looks and I think certain faded and distressed jeans can look quite casual chic.

I am drawn to this pair from 7 For All Mankind. I think it's the classic straight leg design with the right amount of distressing that is giving me desire bumps. I love the casual, laid back vibe radiating from this pair.

The ripped pockets and front legs give this a nonchalant yet gathered feel that would be perfect in weekends and lazy days. They will look good with tees and casual shirts alike, with flip flops and sneakers.

This definitely looks like a pair I can grow and live in. Now if only they had my size! Get this for US$220 at Tobi.

7 For All Mankind Flynt Straight Leg Jeans in Anchorage detailI remember my first pair of 7 For All Mankind jeans was of the Flynt variety. I really liked and I still do the inverted 7s on the back pockets. I thought they looked fresh and different with just the right amount of detail without looking ostentatious.

I didn't think much about them until I saw this pair the other day. I am really liking this shade of blue and the relaxed vibe from this pair of jeans. It's cut a little looser so it's a fresh change from all the skinny and tapered jeans.

The straight leg offers versatility and you can easily wear this in the day and then head to a house party with this at night. The clean lines of this pair will complement a fitted tee shirt and sneakers. Plus, one other great thing about this pair - it works for most body types so say if you're of a slimmer build, just get a size down and work from there.

Rock & Republic 'Damian' Skinny Jeans (Angst Wash)

Rock & Republic 'Damian' Skinny Jeans (Angst Wash) detail Rock & Republic 'Damian' Skinny Jeans (Angst Wash) backI am currently in the midst of a denim crisis; I have outgrown all but 2 of my jeans. Outgrown in the sense that I have been benefiting from my work-outs and I just can't wear most of them anymore without looking constricted. I found new owners for them (which I felt very good about - because they were all in pristine condition and new) which means I am in the market for new ones.

I thought I had gotten past my need to buy new jeans for a while so I've had to re-evaluate and it does take time to find ones that fit perfectly. This is one pair I want to get my hands on.

I am loving the black wash of these skinny jeans and their ultra-low rise; perfect for smaller build individuals myself. This sleek pair will take you through causal work days, dinner dates and after parties. This resin-coated pair will serve you well; whether you're traveling or running errands. The black shade is classic and so universal.

What I am digging most is the cool belt tab at the sides of the back pockets. They instantly add a hit of detail that just brings this pair to the next style level. The extra trim on top of the pockets serve to give an illusion of a double pocket; illuminating the attention to the very kind of detail that I would want in a pair of jeans.

Get this for US$228 at Nordstrom.

Dior Homme mist jeans front Dior Homme mist jeans back

I am digging this shade of grey on this pair of slightly tapered Dior Homme jeans. With no distressing or fading, this will looking amazing with boots or a pair of pointed lace-ups. Simple, clean and with Dior Homme's signature scar stitching on the back pocket, I am adding this to my want list for my trip to Paris in September. 5-pocket cut and polished silver metal hardware make up the rest of this sleek cotton blend 7" (17.5 cm) leg hem pair. Get this for US$285 at eLUXURY.
