Standard Leather Trimmed Pea Coat

Standard Leather Trimmed Pea Coat details
This season, the pea coat is one piece that has seen a surge of resurgence and with good reason - they make for stylish, distinct outerwear. That said, in a sea of similar looking pieces, having one that stands out in a good way is a good way to start.

This faux leather trimmed coat stands out on its ow merits - subtle, cool detail. The leather trim that lines the exterior of this piece adds a dash of edge and chicness all at the same time. Its appeal lies in its unexpectedness - you don't see leather trimmed (faux or real) pea coats very often.

The classic shape and structure of the pea coat is retained while the shoulder epaulets gives this a sliver of military cool that compliments this piece splendidly.

Sale season is now in full swing and there's no better time to get pieces at reduced prices. Pieces that you can keep for the next season - for example, a coat won't be used very much during the warmer months of the year but you can still get one at a reduced price and save it for fall next year. Look for pieces that won't go out of style and avoid faddish pieces.

This bruised coat is one to look at. The clean lines and detailed structure makes this one that will give you plenty of mileage. The knotch collar gives this a dressy feel that is always appreciated while the classic belt and double breasted feature looks modern and fresh - along with the buckle detail on the cuffs.

Wear this to a night on the town or to work - either way, you have one versatile piece and the best thing is, you don't have to break the bank for this!

A.P.C. Wool MAC
A.P.C. Wool MAC back
Winter brings about a need for piling of layers and this can give an unflattering bulk and a confused feel from the multiple textures and colors. Which is why a sleek piece of outerwear will make a lot of difference.

I am totally digging this handsome mackintosh coat. This woolen mac with its clean lines and subtle details will get you through wet and cold weather in style. If the weather can't put you in a good mood, this will definitely make you feel better.

The dark navy, almost black shade is classic and will take you everywhere. The hidden button placket adds to the modern, clean feel of this piece while the vents on the back show off the intricate construction and the superb tailoring.

I would wear this to death. With this on your back, it's like - just bring on the snow and the perpetual drizzle!

There are certain pieces that look good when you are in your 20s and remain that way for years and years to come. These investment pieces stand the test of time and might be costly but the mileage they provide will warrant their price-tag. It's not everyday that you find a piece that will take you through your 20s, 30s, 40s and then 50s. It's been a goal of mine for the past year to add more pieces that reveal their intricate value in years to come to my wardrobe.

This sleek double-breasted coat is one such piece that you wear to death and till you can't wear it anymore. From the outstanding clean lines to the stylized military detailing, this coat catches your attention and draws you in.

I am loving everything about this coat. From the dapper dressed-up feel to the gorgeous pleats at the back held up by a buttoned-down strap, this is one piece that I can't take my eyes off of. The make and superbd construction of this coat means you can wear this with anything. With a suit to work, tuxedo to dinner, jeans to the movies - whatever it is, it will instantly add a whoop of style that won't go unnoticed.

The red tag is another detail that I am fawning over. It stands out perfectly against the black of the coat and provides a contrast and a sliver of color that only enhances the desirability of this already amazing coat.

If you're tired of all the black and greys this season brings but still want a dark, fuss-free color, then navy is the way to go. It's dark enough to hide stains and spills while still offering a sleek alternative.

I am partituclary drawn to this handsome piece from Jil Sander. The clean, minimalistic lines make this a winner and a keeper. A piece that you will be wearing for a very very long time. The heavy felted wool makes this perfect for colder weather which the 4 button-detail gives this a sleek overall look that is always appreciated in the cold months.

The two side pockets are big enough to store essentials for if you don't want to carry a bag. The thing I like the most about this is how it transcends a fixed wardrobe role and instead goes with most everything in one's closet. Take this everywhere - it's fantastic for traveling use and because it's so versatile, it means you don't have to pack extra outerwear. This serves for work, play and travel.

Surface To Air Soft Shell Super Coat
Surface To Air Soft Shell Super Coat detail
I am not a big outdoors person meaning I don't have the urge to go out in the boonies, pitch a tent and make my own fire. But I do love being outdoors - music festivals, picnics in the park, swimming in the ocean, checking out the view from way up high. Having lived in an area where it can get pretty wet certain times of the year (aka Seattle), I know the importance of a good coat.

This piece will make a good companion if you enjoy being outdoors and roughing it up. Made in conjection with outdoor company, LTY, this Surface To Air coat is waterproof and yet ventilated so you can sweat and get it wet and still feel semi-comfortable.

The multiple zippers give this a utilitarian look that is both masculine and modern while my favorite detail on this piece; the taped seams, elevate this to a cool platform that you don't get with a lot of outdoor wear.

This ranger-chic coat gives you both form and function; which might come in handy at the worst possible/inconvenient moments in time. The numerious zippers make this great for storing essentials like wipes, condoms or matches. It's always best to be prepared!

I am not short but because of my frame, I look smaller than I actually am. Which is why I look towards shorter outerwear my size perception out. Longer coats tend to be quite overwhelming and can further cause me to look smaller.

This pea coat would make a good addition this fall. There are a bunch of details I really like on this cool piece. The buttons on the front have a futuristic swirl that increases the appeal and add a dash of sleekness. The outer stitching around the chest buttons and the complimentary tag provides a pattern that is subtle and merticulous.

The back seams give off a conjoined impression that further adds to the coolness of this piece while the handy pocket on the left of the middle of this coat allows you to throw small essentials. The dark navy shape is flattering and classic. All in all, a fantastic piece that will serve you so well.

Ann Demeulemeester Washed Velvet Coat

Ann Demeulemeester Washed Velvet Coat detail
I was really getting into Ann Demeulemeester's work this season. From the wicked boots to the dark coats to the shirts with attached ties. This was after seasons of really not getting her vision or where she was coming from. Then I saw this and it reminded me of just how I still don't get her.

Look at this - I really don't know what to make out of this murky colored coat. I don't see the point of having a washed effect on velvet coat. If anything, the washed effect makes this look rusty and cheap. Not to mention completely undesirable.

Which is a total shame because I really wanted to like this coat. I love its shape and the high collar detail along with the fantastic slightly curved button placket that adds a punch of sleekness. The inverted pleat shows off the attention to detail; the kind of detail that differentiates an ordinary coat from a fantastic one.

But these wonderful details can't save this from sartorial rustiness and the horrible aftertaste this has left me with.

When I think back on all the articles of clothing that I have bought over the years that never made it on my back or just hung at the end of my closet until the time came to make room for new clothes. It's always the same thought, 'What was I thinking?' and frankly, I never had an answer for that. So these days, a prerequisite for all my clothing purchases is that they have to stand out and provide a definite stamp of desirability.

This coat did just that for me. The toggle closure detail is the first thing that you notice - it takes center stage. Detailed, sleek and structured, the toggle details serve to bring out the beauty of this coat. I have seen toggle coats that just look overwhelmed by their toggles. But this is not one of those.

The toggle detail extends to the cuffs which add another dose of imagery. The integrated belt straps and the clean single vent at the back shows off the meticulous detail of this coat. The slit pocket at the chest brings out the dressiness and would be a great platform for further self expression by means of a pocket square or silk handkerchief.

Here's the best part: at US$168, this is a worthy buy that will give you value in all sense of the word. Get this D Collection Toggle Coat at Urban Outfitters

Kai-Aakmann Black Half Peacoat

I am quite aware of what works for my body type and what I should generally avoid. I do love a good coat but often a lot of coats off the rack are too long for me. A coat that is too long will end up making me look smaller. So I turn to shorter alternatives.

This half peacoat is a great example of a classic piece turned into something that works for all body types and heights. The shorter length gives this a more modern, current feel while the  belt on the waist and cuffs add detail that won't go unnoticed.

I especially like how you can manipulate the chest flap for varying effects - button the bottom layer and leave the top on unbuttoned for a hit of texture and contrast or leave both unbuttoned for a thicker, more subtle look. It looks fantastic both ways.

Balenciaga Asymmetric Wool Coat

Balenciaga Asymmetric Wool Coat details
Nicolas Ghesquiere is my favorite designer, hands down. I remember my first Balenciaga piece. It was a blue dress shirt with white stripes and contrast cuffs and collar - it was a dream and when I saw it hanging at Barneys, I knew I had have it and I did. I was amazed at the fit and it was a sartorial epiphany - I finally found a designer that made clothes that fit me. I followed his collection seasons after seasons and I never fail to be awed by his genius.

It's like this gorgeous coat. In wool and grey - perfect for fall. But that's not it - the asymmetric detail took my breath away (for a split second) as I marveled at the superb vision and the sleek, clean lines. The asymmetric hidden button placket shows off the subtle draping of the collar superbly while the streamlined side pockets shows off the excellent meticulous attention to detail.

The chest pocket is an additional platform for expression allowing you to slip a pocket square or a scarf. This is on the top of my want-list this season and like my very first Balenciaga shirt, I need to have this.

Jil Sander - Only A Click Away
The Jil Sander online store is now open. You can now shop the runway looks (not all of them, but it's better than nothing) from the comforts of your own home. Here are my picks from the online store:

Jil Sander Velvet Runway Coat

This gorgeous velvet military coat seen on the runway was chosen to be the coat featured on the online store front for good reason. Its sleek, luxourious exterior coupled with the chic rugged military styling is kick ass in its own quiet way. The subtle yet distinct sculptural shape will give an instant oomph on any given day.

Jil Sander Knit Cardigan

Jil Sander Knit Cardigan details
When I first saw this knit cardigan, I actually thought it was a blazer. It isn't but I love how it resembles one. From the chest pocket to the merticulous construction at the back. Just take a look at the back - the seams and liens resemble the sci-fi inspired jackets seen on the runways of Calvin Klein and Balenciaga. You get the hard look with the soft fluidity of a cardigan. Awesome.

Jil Sander Beauty Case
This textured leather case is supposed to be a beauty case. Although I don't really know exactly what a beauty case is (store makeup brushes?), my first thought was dopp kit. But this is too small and slim to be a dopp kit but you can easily throw essentials like lip balm, sanitizer, mints or use it to hold credit cards, loose change, keys, receipts, boarding passes when you travel. Helps you stay organized.

Ann Demeulemeester Black Wool Asymmetrical Coat

Asymmetrical details are very prevalent this season and with good reasons, they are a fantastic not to mention stylish alternative to the tried-and-tested straight button plackets. They look modern and yet have such clean lines that they won't go out of style. Sleek details will always be appreciated.

This 100% wool coat looks great and packs a sartorial punch too. Its asymmetrical button placket is a breath of fresh air while its pop-up brown buttons offer a subtle contrast to the black of the coat while at the same time offering up texture. I don't know about you but the brown buttons make me want to run my fingers over them.

The chest pocket and 2 side pockets round up this chic coat. You can pretty much wear this to work, to a dinner date, to the movies; wherever. Leather gloves will look great with this coat, bringing out the brown of the buttons.

Rick Owens Silk Coat

Each year, I look forward to winter and I go to Europe every December (I didn't go in 2007 but that was because I had to skip Europe and head to Seattle for top-tier elite frequent flier status. It's a long story). The Europeans have a fantastic sentiment about dressing up and they do take a lot of pride in what they wear and how they are groomed in general which is something I always appreciate.

This kick-ass coat would be perfect for roaming the streets of Europe. I just love the clean, sexy lines of this silk piece. Look at it - it gives off a sheen in the light and the fluidity of the fabric when you move just makes me fall for this even more.

You could fasten this at the waist with a single button or as a double breast - either way, this is a piece that is seriously giving me lust bumps (like goosebumps but induced by lust). I love the draping and the overall cut and silhouette. It's dark, mysterious and just sex on a coat.

It is made extra long so that might be a problem because I am not the tallest person so I would need to shorten this. But those of you blessed with height, savor this beauty.

I have a thing for colder weather so much so that I head to somewhere cold and snowing every December. I like dressing up and there are clothing options that only cold weather can permit and wearing a gorgeous topcoat is one of them.

This silk distressed satin topcoat is luxourious and oh-so-cool. Seen in the Barneys' mailer, this double breasted coat has the edge and sheen that speaks volume. I like the simple 2 buttons that make up this double-breasted piece. No chunky, clunky extra buttons that no one is ever going to use. Just simple and clean - button up and go.

The welt pocket at the chest means a platform for expression with a silk scarf or hankerchief. With a tuxedo feel, this stunner will get you through dinners, winters and then some more for years to come.

Get this for US$1745 at Barneys.
