I always say 'Fake it till you make it', and that is certainly true when it comes to a tan. Gone are the days where you need good weather in order to attain a glow. Now you can have it all in a bottle, all year round, anytime of the day.

Sensitive skin requires extra care to bring back skin to its prime condition; that means using correct products and avoiding harsh ones. Redness, irritation and inflammation are all symptoms of sensitive skin but they can be kept in check.

Self-Tanners:

The safest tan is a fake one. Prolonged, unprotected sun exposure wrecks havoc on your skin by rapidly increasing melanin production causing age and sun spots, dehydrating your skin causing fine lines and wrinkles and the loss of firmness and elasticity because of collagen depletion.

I love the sun and the fun thing about time spent under the sun is attaining a post-vacation glow. Note the word 'glow' not 'bake'. You want to look as if you were kissed by the sun, not raped. The most convenient way to do that is through a bottle. Gone are the days of orange and streaky tanners. The new generation of self-tanners give you a healthy dose of color without all the mess and the hassle.

Before applying self-tanning products, it always pays to exfoliate first. Exfoliating helps sweep away skin cells and even out skin tone, leading to a more even and complete result. And it also pays to wait a couple of minutes for the lotion to dry on your body before piling on clothes.

L'Oreal Sublime Bronze, Gradual Self-Tanning Lotion

I like L'Oreal Sublime Bronze, Gradual Self-Tanning Lotion (6.7oz/200ml) (US$9.99). This affordable tanner gives you a color that you can improve with every application. This doesn't smell neither does it give you a telling orange look. The even and natural color is something I appreciate along with its price tag.

Prescriptives Sunsheen All Over Self Tanner

I like Prescriptives Sunsheen All Over Self Tanner (4.2oz/125ml) (US$14.50). This quickly absorbed self tanner gives you a natural boost of color in 3 hours. I use this all over my body and face and I like how natural the color is and how it doesn't streak or smudge. The smell is light and the color stays for days.

Clinique Self Sun Face Tinted Lotion

I like Clinique Self Sun Face Tinted Lotion (1.7oz/50ml) (US$18.50). This oil free, non-pore clogging tinted lotion gives you color in hours. I like how easy it absorbs into the skin and how natural it all looks. The color lasts for days, after which you simply reapply to attain the fading glow.

Rodial Skincare Brazilian Tan

I also like Rodial Skincare Brazilian Tan, Dark (5.1oz/150ml) (US$49). This intensive self-tanner has a dual action - one to give you a deep color and the other to replenish and boost skin with its Pomegranate Ellagic Tannin ingredient. I how this smells like the beach and rich color it develops and how my skin feels softer and looks radiant after an application.

Sensitive Skin:

I never thought that I would be one with sensitive skin because I previously had the impression that a person with sensitive skin had to have extremely dry skin. I don't know why or where I got that impression from but it was only after my skin began to start reacting to certain products that I was sure I had very oily, sensitive skin.

I began searching for the best remedies and solutions to soothe my confused, combination skin. I found Avene and from the first time I started using their products, I was a convert. Chock full of Avene's Thermal Water, all Avene products are suitable for all skin type, especially sensitive ones.

Avene Clean-AcI like Avene Clean-Ac (1.35oz/40ml) (US$15). This is a must-have for me and anyone who suffers from breakouts and the subsequent dryness resulting from acne treatments. I love how this soothes my dehydrated, flaky skin by enveloping it with essential moisture. This helps repair the skin's moisture barrier without causing more breakouts.

Avene Skin Recovery CreamI like Avene Skin Recovery Cream (39g) (US$31.69). This multi-purpose cream calms and soothes skin damaged and irritated by weather, heat and dermalogical procedures. I take this every with me and use it after every session at the dermatologist. Not only does it help repair the skin's natural barrier, it also replenishes lost moisture. I like how it comforts my skin after every laser treatment at the dermatologist. Great all-year round cream.

Avene Thermal Spring WaterI also like Avene Thermal Spring Water (1.58oz/300g) (US$16). I have a bottle of this mist everywhere in the house. In the bedroom, in the bathroom and in every one of my bags. This handy mist really works to reduce irritation and redness from heat, allergies and external aggressions. I remember being in the Chanel store in Paris and my sister was rashing up for some strange reason and a spritz of this reduced the redness and calmed her skin. Just like that.

This is also wonderful for airplane rides to replenish lost moisture from the dehydrating air cabin. I also use this as a toner and a booster before I use a tissue mask. This helps your skin to better absorbs your products and masks.

Avene Cleanance Soap-free Facial Gel Cleanser
I have extremely oily skin that is pretty prone to breakouts and excessive blackheads. That said, I also experience sensitivity in the form of dryness and peeling and tightness despite having really oily skin. So finding a cleanser that would not only clean well but also protect and respect my skin's natural balance is something quite important to me.

I recently went shopping for a new cleanser and I gave this a whirl without much thought because I knew I was not going to experience any harsh effects from using Avene products and I was running out of time so I needed to buy a cleanser and then leave.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well this cleaned. My skin felt fresh, clean and smooth after every wash without the feeling of tightness and dryness I sometimes experience with other cleansers. The gel cleanser works into a nice foam and sweeps off impurities and keeps breakouts at bay.

Its high concentration of Avene spring thermal water gave my skin a moisture boost and I no longer have to deal with flaky skin and tightness and that is something I am quite grateful for.

Avene Gentle Purifying Scrub
I am a firm believer in regular exfoliation. Not only does regular exfoliation help removed dead skin cells and promote growth of healthy new cells. It also deep cleanses your skin while helping to reduce the look of visible pores and skin discolorations.

I use a variety of daily exfoliants so when the time came to shop for a new facial scrub, I wanted something that was gentle and yet effective enough to slough off all my dead skin cells. It so happened my sister was in Paris and I asked her to pick up a bunch of Avene products for me while she was there and this was one of them.

The gel texture helps prevent dryness while two exfoliants together with a skin smoothing agent work together to remove impurities and skin imperfections. The thing I love about Avene products is the high concentration of Avene thermal spring water (which makes this very ideal for sensitive skin) - giving my skin comfort and a soothing feel after every use.

My skin felt cleaner and looked better wih each use. Regular exfoliation also helps ensure your skin products get absorbed better into your skin. My sister started using this scrub in Paris and she loved it so much, she went out and bought another bottle for me to replace the one she used.

Avene Soothing Eye Contour CreamI've been a fan of Avene products for a couple of years now and I picked this up at the store along with a couple of other Avene products without giving much thought to it because it was on sale and I would always need eye creams. I didn't use it till 3 weeks ago and like all the Avene products I have used, this one didn't disappoint.

I was spending time in the sun, swimming more and the area around my eye got very dry and tight from the rays and the chlorine. This eye cream helped relieve and treat all of those symptoms quickly and effectively.

Chock full of Avene's thermal spring water and Alpha-bisabolol, this white cream slaters on easily to envelope the delicate eye area with a coating of moisture to reduce redness and tightness. Extracts of Dextran Sulfate helps relieve puffiness while anti-oxidants help combat everyday aggressions.

My eyes were hydrated, looked healthier and fresher and gone were the irritations. Its small, compact size makes this great to travel with.

Get this for US$23 (0.34 oz/10 ml) at Drugstore.com.

Avene Clean-AcContrary to popular belief, oily skin has its dry and flaky moments too just like any other skin type. Harsh soap, dry climate and acne treatments are just some of the contributing factors that dehydrate skin.

I recently had to deal with a sudden breakout arising from stress and sudden climate change and my treatment plan left my skin tight, uncomfortable and flaky. I found this at the Avene counter at the drugstore and I jumped on it. I am a fan of Avene products and I was so throughly impressed with this.

This moisturizer is specially formulated to help your skin deal with dry and harsh acne treatments. With a very high concentration of Avene thermal spring water, this goes and glides on smoothly to rehydrate and balance blemish-prone skin. You can feel the effect instantly and it worked after just one application.

The best thing about this, is that it is lightweight enough to be used on top of your regular acne treatment moisturizer. Use it day/night whenever your skin needs a boost of moisture. My flaky skin stopped peeling and the tightness was gone. Just like that.

A must have for every acne treatment program. Get this for US$16 (1.35oz/40ml) at Drugstore.com.

Avene Restorative Skin CreamIn life, accidents happen and sometimes shit hits the fan. It could be at work, at home or after a skin treatment. For me, it was after a skin treatment - the laser was too harsh on my skin and I had a small spot on my nose as a reminder to not think that I know better all the time; because I don't.

I picked this up at the store as soon as I realized the redness was not going to subside in hours; it had started flaking and was looking a tad inflamed. I applied this and hoped for the best. This turned out to be a bit of a skin saver.

After the first day, the burnt spot decreased in size and redness while looking less visible. The flaking had stopped and the skin around it looked less irritated. After 5 days and 3 applications daily, no one could tell or notice I recently had an abused spot.

This fast acting concotion of copper sulfate and zinc sulfate work together to help maintain a productive skin environment for repair and recovery. Mirconized sucralfate aids in the maintence of the fragile skin barrier and helps minimize irritation. Like all Avene products, this cream is chock full of Avene thermal water to help calm and soothe your skin.

You can use this on any open wounds; cuts, bruises, post-dermalogical treatmets etc and it is also gentle enough for use on infants. This is a must have for any first aid-kit.

Get this for US$21 (1.4oz/40ml) at Drugstore.com.

Avene Acne Spot TreatmentRunning around Tuscany and Paris, dealing with lost luggage, long days and underwhelming pseudo avant garde hotels left me with unwanted zits and spots across my face.

To combat both spots and dehydrated skin; with its high levels of Avene Spring water, I turn to this spot zapper from Avene.

This emergency spot treatment helps kill bacteria and relief the uncomfortable symptoms of zits; like redness and dryness. So you don't have to pile on another moisturizer just to combat the dryness of the winter months.

This is definitely friendly on sensitive, dehydrated and oily ski dried out due to weather. Zap your zits, calm your skin and maybe tomorrow, you won't have to go through the hassle of claiming travel insurance.

Get this for US$16 (0.5oz/15ml) at Drugstore.com.

Avene Cleanance K

I find myself with the occasional zit and they pop up no matter how clean my face is. Since I sleep with the air-conditioner most everyday, I've been looking for a product that would keep the zits at bay and not add to the dryness of my skin at night. I found this 6 months ago and it's great because it's got both AHA and BHA which gently exfoliate the skin to lessen the marks left behind by those zits. It also has an extract of Cucurbita Pepo and Zinc Gluconate which help minimise sebum production while purifying the skin when used during the day. Along with Salicylic acid and Avene spring water, this handy moisturizer keeps the zits at bay when you sleep while soothing and softening your skin. Pretty handy to have around. Get it at a local pharmacy like Guardian or at Drugstore.com for US$18.

Avene Thermal WaterAvene's thermal spring water has health-promoting properties recognized by the French National Academy of Medicine. It has well-researched physical and chemical characteristics, pharmacological effects and is bacteriologically pure right from the source. Hence, making this the perfect liquid balm for sensitive, inflamed skin. You can use it to soothe skin after a trip to your dermatologist, use it after chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser treatments. It is also suitable for treating Eczema, contact and atopic dermatitis.

I make sure I have a bottle with me everytime I travel. I use it on board every flight to combat the inevitable dryness that comes with being in an airplane. This tube of thermal water with silica, leaves a soothing barrier over your skin; sealing in moisture. To see just how dry a plane cabin is, spill a glass of water onto your seat and watch it dry completely in 10 minutes. Having a tube of this ensures you arrive at your destination looking fresh.

It comes in 3 different sizes, the 1.76oz/50ml is the perfect size for your carry-on luggage or weekender. You can get it for US$7 at Skin Care Rx. For Singaporean readers, check out selected Watson's or Guardian (you'll have more luck at the bigger outlets).
